ROLE OF PEACE WORLDWIDE TOWARDS ACHIEVING MDGs IN PAKISTAN
- Eradicate Extreme Poverty
Poverty is the lack of basic human needs and the condition of having fewer resources or having less income than others within the society or country. According to the United Nations almost half of the population of Pakistan gets one meal a day. We cannot eradicate the poverty but we can reduce it to a maximum level. Therefore we established vocational training centers of Peace Worldwide which provides them necessary vocational trainings and skills to facilitate them for earning livelihoods respectfully and contribute to the prosperity of their immediate family. The main targets for these trainings are illiterate women, poor and needy people. Skill based trainings like sewing, embroidery; handicrafts and stitching are given to women in the vocational training centers of Peace Worldwide, technical short courses and basic computer trainings for males and youngsters enabling them to respond to requirements of changing trends of modern job market.
- Achieve Universal Primary Education
Education is a basic necessity of Human being, in developing nations like Pakistan, where one third of its citizens are living below the poverty line; poor people find it difficult to provide education to their children. We established 8 schools in different districts of Pakistan with the campaign EDUCATION FOR ALL. We provide free basic schooling to poor and needy children; encourage their parents to send their children to schools. The teachers and staff are highly qualified and friendly and children enjoy their learnings. Talent shows are organized to promote the talent of children. Peace Worldwide also sponsors children who are unable to pay their fees.
- Promote Gender Equality And Women Empowerment
Women are considered as a second class citizen in Pakistan. Though Pakistan’s Parliament consists of the Senate and the National Assembly, the Senate has 100 members, at least 17 of which must be women and the National Assembly comprises 342 members, of which 60 are reserved for women, Pakistani women still face numerous problems due to discriminatory laws, weak system of justice and law enforcement and violence. The constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan gives equal rights to both men and women; we arrange seminars, workshops and trainings of gender equality and women empowerment. We pay special attention in women empowerment through vocational trainings and livelihood earning programmes.
Reduce Child Mortality
Maternal care and child health care statistics in Pakistan are the poorest in South Asia, in Pakistan every eleventh child dies before reaching the age of 1. It is observed that mortality rate is higher among poor than the rich. It is also observed that early marriages of girls cause child mortality. Government of Pakistan has expanded the important lady health worker programme, these health workers visits door to door and guide about maternal and new born baby’s health. It is also observed that infants die due to pneumonia and diarrhea because mothers don’t know what to do when the child is suffering from these diseases. Mother’s education is very important; an educated mother can provide better health care, nutrition and hygiene. We provide awareness programmes to the mothers; guide them about hygiene and health of children, to take precautionary steps during delivery. Peace Worldwide is doing a lot of work in this important area through our field offices in different parts of country.
- Improve Maternal Health,
Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. While motherhood is often a positive and fulfilling experience, for too many women it is associated with suffering, ill-health and even death. The major direct causes of maternal morbidity and mortality include hemorrhage, infection, high blood pressure, unsafe abortion, and obstructed labor. The status of maternal health is very poor in Pakistan an estimated 30,000 women die each year due to pregnancy. Our skilled lady health workers provide family planning and pre and post natal care to the mothers in slums. Proper health care are provided to those who have no access to hospitals or clinics and provide them with necessary information and technical assistance.
- Combat HIV AIDS, Malaria And Other Disease
We organize special AIDS programme every year on world aids day and youth from all over the country attend this seminar every year. We encourage people to adopt safe sexual behavior. A comprehensive education for young people is an essential part. Providing young people from basic AIDS education enables them to protect themselves from becoming infected. Young people are often particularly vulnerable to sexually transmitted HIV, and to HIV infection as a result of drug-use. Acquiring knowledge and skills encourages young people to avoid or reduce behaviors that carry a risk of HIV infection. A special awareness programme is arranged especially for women, we encourage the HIV and AIDS affected mothers to avoid unwanted pregnancies, prevent the transmission of HIV from HIV positive mothers to their infants during pregnancy, labor, delivery and breastfeeding. Appropriate counseling and support to women living with HIV enables them to make informed decisions about their reproductive lives. Hygiene is the first step in prevention of Malaria; we arrange special programmes in schools and slums for children and especially housewives to keep themselves clean. We provide nets to protect sleeping areas in slums of Islamabad. We guide them to keep their homes clean and tidy. |
